The clogged ear can be a matter of huge discomfort. Apart from making you feel miserable, it can affect your overall hearing abilities as well. The sound might come across blurred or even unclear as a result of the clogged ears. There is no age limit for clogged years and people of every age group are equally susceptible to this condition. Essential oils for clogged ears can be useful if the blockage is due to ear wax build-up, sinus or water accumulation in the ear canal and allergies. However, if the clogged ear is accompanied by ache, bleeding or discharge from the ears, you should consult the doctor immediately.

Use of Various Essential Oils to Treat Clogged Ears

Home remedies are very useful in certain cases especially if you have blockage due to cold or sinus. Some of the most common cures include the use of essential oils to reduce the condition. There are in fact many different types of essential oils that are effective:

Tea Tree Oil

If your clogged ears are caused by a cold, the flu or a sinus infection, you can use a tea tree inhalation to get rid of the infection and relieve the congestion quickly. Combine tea tree oil with a simple steam inhalation to relieve your blocked ears naturally. 

  • Pour boiling water in a bowl.

  • Add a few drops of tea tree oil into it.

  • Inhale the steam but be careful to avoid getting burnt.

Garlic Oil

This is another great option for clearing clogged ears. The garlic oil has natural anti-bacterial properties that enhance the congestion clearing abilities.

  • Mash two garlic cloves and let it stand for 10 minutes to form the allicin.

  • Once the allicin is formed, put the crushed garlic with 5 tsp. of olive oil in a saucepan.

  • Warm it on a very low heat for 10-15 minutes to let all the beneficial properties of the garlic be infused into the oil.

  • Once it cools down, you can apply to your ears for 1 minute. This can help loose wax or any blockage that causes your ears to feel clogged.

  • Drain the oil out.

Olive Oil

When you consider using essential oils for clogged ears, olive oil is one of the best options to you. Oliver oil has the soothing properties that can help remove any discomfort of your ears and clear the clogged ears.

  • Warm extra-virgin olive oil.

  • Put a few drops in your clogged ear with an ear dropper.

  • Keep the head sideways to help the oil get soaked.

  • Let the oil stay in your ears for a few minutes to soften the wax.

  • Gently remove the loosened wax from the outer part of your ears with a cotton bud.

  • Use this remedy depending on your need.

Lavender Oil

The Lavender oil also ranks high up on the list of essential oils for clogged ears. Apart from clearing blocked ears, freshly extracted lavender oil has many other benefits too, such as relieving pain, easing any type of nervous pain, treating respiratory complaints and improving blood circulation.

  • You can apply this oil all around the outside of your ears and neck.

  • Put your middle finger with this oil and gently put it inside your ear too.

  • Move your finger in different direction.

Other Home Remedies for Clogged Ears

Apart from using essential oils for clogged ears, there are some other commonly used alternatives for treating ear aches and potentially blocked ears. These include:

Valsalva Maneuver

It is an effective technique to help you get rid of clogged ears. 

  • Use your fingers to pinch your nostrils, close your mouth and then breathe deeply.

  • Blow the air out from your nose to regulate the air pressure. Don't blow it too hard as it may hurt the ear drum.

  • When done correctly, you can hear a slight pop signaling the Eustachian tube has opened.

Alcohol and Apple Cider Vinegar

Combining alcohol with apple cider vinegar can be useful to deal with any type of bacterial infection that causes clogged ears.

  • Mix equal amount of alcohol and apple cider vinegar.

  • Lie down on your side and put a few drops in your affected ear and let it settle down for 5-10 minutes.

  • You can then remove the ear wax with an cotton bud quite easily.

  • If it doesn't work once, repeat this process.

Warm Compress

A warm compress is very helpful to deal with the clogged ears caused by a cold or sinus congestion. The heat can help loosen congestion and unclog the ear.

  • Soak a washcloth in warm water, squeeze out the water and then apply it over the clogged ear for 5-10 minutes. 

  • Or you can wrap a hot water bottle into a towel and apply it over the affected ear for 10 minutes.

Hydrogen peroxide

It is a great option to unclog your ear if it is blocked due to ear wax. 

  • Put 2 drops of 3% hydrogen peroxide in the ear and wait for 10 minutes.

  • Then tilt your head to the opposite side and let the ear wax drain out along with the hydrogen peroxide.

  • But be careful to regulate the quantity and dilution. Too much of it can damage your ears.

To help unclog the ear, you can try this method:

  • Fill an ear syringe with lukewarm water. 

  • Tilt your head with the clogged ear up and pull on the ear lobe to open the ear canal.

  • Squeeze the syringe gently to squirt water into the ear canal, but be careful to avoid hurting the ear drum.

  • Wait for 5-10 minutes to let the wax be softened.

  • Tilt your head to the opposite direction to drain out the ear wax.

Chewing Gum

The constant chewing action sometimes helps in clearing clogged ears. Eat a hard candy or chew a gum to help open up the clogged ears.

Nasal Spray

If your clogged ears are caused by sinus blockage, you can choose nasal spray to unclog them. Nasal spray can help clear sinuses, hence unclogging your ears.
