While some think the mornings are the best time to study, in the evening hours the mind is at its most creative phase for others. Some people find studying at night to be easier and tend to be faced with less distraction once the sun goes down. For example, many college students would agree that late night studies session is where they are at their most productive. Use These Methods to Keep You Alert and Study at Night


Turn on the lights

When it is brighter, it is harder for you to fall asleep. Besides, bright lights can trick your circadian rhythm into believing that it is still daylight out.


Chew on something

When you are keeping your mouth busy, you become more alert and are less likely to fall asleep. Try chewing on a piece of gum or have some ice close by to chew on to help keep you up and attentive. 



Before you sit down to study in the evening, get the blood flowing and your heart pumping. By planning out your workout just before your study session, you can more easily stay alert and awake well into the late hours of the night. 


Ditch the junk food

Instead of munching on chips and candy while you study, choose healthier snacks. Not only will this help keep you from consuming unnecessary calories, but it helps keep your blood sugar up as well. Protein packed snakes like organic peanut butter or beef jerky will keep your blood sugar up and give a little boost to your brain.


Have a plan

How to study at night effectively will require you to know exactly what you need to be focusing on. Formulate a plan for all the things you need to review and retain. Double check class notes, the syllabus, instruction and anything else that will help you focus on what you need to learn, instead of wasting time with stuff that will be irrelevant.


Prepare your study space

Clear away any distraction that will keep you from focusing on the material. Have all you notes, books, pens and any other useful information ready to go. Don't forget to bring in an extra light if necessary and have your healthy snacks close by.


Study in a group

For some, this can be a distraction, but for most having others studying along with you can keep you more focused and alert. Not only will you be more productive in a group setting, but you will also have others to go over the material with to ensure you know what you need to know, or someone to help answer a question when you have one. 


Give your brain a break

There will come times during your late night study session where you know your brain is just not focusing or retaining any more information. When this occurs, take a break and make little doodle or drawings on a piece of paper. By giving your brain a ten-minute break, you can relax and refocus easily.


Take a walk

Every hour or hour and a half, get up to walk around for ten or fifteen minutes. If you can get outside for some fresh air which will help you feel refreshed and refocused, it would be better. Wear something comfortable

If you are going to be studying all night, you don't want to be fidgeting with your clothes. Being uncomfortable can make the time drag on and you are less likely to get anything done. Wear something comfortable like sweats, yoga pants, and a T-shirt or tank top. In this way you'll be able to move around easily, get settled faster and start studying sooner.


Maintain your posture

As the evening goes on, it can be easy to begin to slump and slouch over your books and notes which can lead to dozing off or falling asleep. Instead, sit up and keep your posture. You will study more effectively, and can study longer through the night.


Switch things up

Sticking with one subject matter at a time may seem like a good idea until you start dozing off and have five more chapters to read through. Instead of trying to plow through one subject at a time, switch things up when you start feeling sleepy. Trying doing a little bit of work for another subject and then go back to finish your original material.


Turn on the tunes

If you can put on some music, do so. How to study at night effectively can be done when you have the right music playing. Choose something that has a faster tempo and avoid anything that resembles ambient noise.
