Low sperm count is diagnosed by a number less than 15 million sperms in one milliliter of semen. The average is 60 million per ml. Masturbation is a normal activity that everyone participates in. While religious beliefs or cultural doctrines may label it a guilty sin, you can bet even the most moral critics are masturbating in secret. The question is, are masturbation and sperm count related?

Can Masturbation Cause Low Sperm Count?

Numerous studies have demonstrated there is no correlation between masturbation and the sperm count. It is simply a myth.

Sperm is entirely different than semen. When a man ejaculates large amounts of semen, they may think they are depleting their sperm. The truth is, those little testes produce millions of sperm no matter how old the donor is. It isn’t possible to run out of sperm or to store it up for later use. Masturbation and the sperm count are not related. As a matter of fact, sperm needs to be ejected to allow new sperm a place to live.

Masturbation typically leads to ejaculation and this will temporarily lower your sperm count, however, it will not have any long-term effects. However, it is best to avoid frequent masturbation during the period you and your partner are trying to conceive a child.

Several Things that Can Affect Sperm Count

  • Tight clothing such as biker shorts, underwear or tight pants can restrict the testes significantly and damage or limit the sperm count. There is no hard-core evidence to support this theory, but specialists recommend loose clothing.

  • Heat sources, such as hot baths, hot tubs or heating pads are a theoretical cause of low sperm counts. It is suggested these activities be avoided or limited when trying to conceive.

  • Occupation and environment: Truck drivers, computer workers that sit more than they walk, are subject to overheating their testes and causing damage to the sperm or reducing the amount produced. Walk around as often as possible. Environmental toxins in the workplace are common culprits.

  • Smokers’ sperm tends to be slower in motion and smaller in size. Stress is also associated with lowering the sperm count and many stressed out people smoke, drink too much caffeine, or take medications that make contribute to the count.

  • Injuries to the testes, even during childhood can damage the vessels and nerves related to sperm production. Likewise, poor nutrition and genetics play an important part in the process.

Diagnosis and Treatment for Low Sperm Counts

Can masturbation cause low sperm count? We’ve already answered the question. Identifying the problem is crucial, although not always possible. Some tests can be performed to diagnose the issue. Five are listed below.

  • Sperm analysis- the first test performed to count the number of sperm present

  • Scrotal ultrasound- examines testes and vesicular structures

  • Hormone levels- examines the pituitary function

  • Genetic testing- a simple blood test to reveal inherited factors

  • Testicular biopsy- to determine if sperm production is normal

Sperm count analysis cannot be concluded with one sample. The collection should be repeated at least 3 times. New sperm is produced continually but does not mature for up to 70 days. So, if you stopped smoking or drinking alcohol one month ago the new changes will not have had time to take effect.

A scrotal ultrasound uses sound waves to study the vessels and the testes for any abnormalities. Blockages of vessels may be reducing the amount of sperm be transported.

A hormone, produced by the pituitary gland is a key element in sperm production. If the levels are subnormal, the doctor will investigate why and determine how to correct it.

Can masturbation cause low sperm count? The answer is no. Genetics, however, in some cases, needs to be eliminated before implementing treatment. A simple blood test is required to determine syndromes or diseases that can lower or damage sperm.
